The hamlet of Anzac is located approximately 35 kilometres southeast of Fort McMurray. The community is situated along the Athabasca River and has approximately 800 residents. Anzac was named after the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC), which trained in the area during World War I. The community was established in the 1920s as a stop along the Northern Alberta Railway and was primarily a hub for the forestry and logging industry. Today, Anzac is a peaceful residential community that provides a quieter alternative to the bustle of Fort McMurray. Fort McMurray is a major urban centre and serves as the economic hub of the oil sands region. The city is located on the banks of the Athabasca River and is home to approximately 75,000 residents.

The Anzac Recreation Centre is committed to bringing excellence to sport, recreation, and event experience to the hamlet of Anzac. It was one of the host venues for the 2015 Canadian Ringette Championships, the 2018 Alberta Winter Games, and the Wood Buffalo 2023 Arctic Winter Games.
