Downtown East Village Real Estate & Community Guide

The Downtown East Village area has been referred to as the place “where Calgary first began.” This area dates back to the mid 1800’s when the Northwest Mounted Police established an outpost now known as Fort Calgary. Once known to be a vibrant area that hosted residential, commercial and industrial buildings, East Village started to show a decline by 1941. It is reported this area had a steady decline from the 1940’s until 2007 when the City of Calgary formed the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) and plans began for the revitalization of this area. The CMLC spent over 350 million dollars on the restoration of historic buildings and infrastructure improvements. Some of these improvements included the addition of Studio Bell, home of the National Music Center, building of the Central Library, and development of the Jack and Jean Leslie Riverwalk area.

Now known as a trendy area to live, work and visit the Downtown East Village has a mix of residential, retail and historic buildings. The Riverwalk offers access to over 700 KM of pathways which connect you to many other Calgary neighbourhoods and points of interest including: The Calgary Zoo, Fort Calgary, The Bird Sanctuary and the Fish Hatchery.
