West Hillhurst Real Estate & Community Guide

West Hillhurst is an established NW community within the inner city area of Calgary.  Annexed by the city of Calgary in 1907, development didn’t take place until after World War II when many of the houses were built for soldiers returning home after service overseas.  Many of these homes are still standing today despite the fact that they were only intended to be used for a short amount of time. This community is also home to many stunning new homes.  As of the 2019 census, West Hillhurst is home to approximately 6,500 residents.

Getting around the city is a breeze as you’ll have access to a major north-south route (West Hillhurst is bisected by Crowchild Trail).  If you want to travel east-west, you can travel via Memorial Drive or you’re just a short drive away from the Trans-Canada Highway. The downtown core is only minutes away via Kensington Road and 14th Street NW.  There are a couple of major bus routes that service West Hillhurst.  You’ll find schedules and maps on all the transit services offered in West Hillhurst by visiting the Calgary Transit website https://www.calgarytransit.com/

Nearby attractions and services include the downtown core with all of its attractions, the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, Riley Park, Prince’s Island Park (accessible directly via the Bow River Pathway System) and the Foothills Medical Centre & Alberta Children’s Hospital.

The West Hillhurst Community Association has a long and rich history.  It’s beginning came in the 1940’s when residents realized the need for greater community cohesion and opportunities for children. This association hosts multiple youth sporting programs, yoga and many other activities to keep its residents busy.  As well, a large number of yearly family-friendly events are hosted here and are very popular with the residents.  The association’s community centre is located at 1940 – 6th Ave NW on the same grounds as the Bowview Outdoor Pool.  In the winter months, residents can join the West Hillhurst Skating Club. Be sure to check out the West Hillhurst Community Association website https://www.westhillhurst.com/ or visit their Facebook page.

The West Hillhurst Park is home to multiple tennis courts, baseball diamonds and a fabulous community playground.  Broadview Park, located near the Bow River, is home to teams from the Calgary United Soccer Association. On the western edge of West Hillhurst children can run off steam at the fabulous Helicopter Playground which also includes a large sportsfield with a baseball diamond.  Residents of West Hillhurst will definitely want to take advantage of the fabulous river pathway system that runs along the southern edge of West Hillhurst, east to west along the Bow River.  Not only is it a great recreational opportunity, but it also provides residents with an easy way to get to the downtown core via cycling.
