Upper Mount Royal Real Estate & Community Guide
Mount Royal, an inner city community in Calgary’s southwest, is home to the neighbourhoods of Upper Mount Royal (to the south) and Lower Mount Royal (the northern section, on flat terrain), which are separated by an escarpment that runs along Cameron and Royal Avenues in an east-west direction.
The historic community of Upper Mount Royal is one of Calgary’s wealthiest neighbourhoods and is home to some of the city’s most expensive and luxurious homes. Ranging from the older character homes built by the railroad barons to newer contemporary showpieces, this exclusive luxury Calgary neighbourhood is one of the City’s most sought-after districts. Originally an enclave of the city’s American born business elite, the neighbourhood was originally known as ‘American Hill’. This informal name eventually gave way to the more Canadian name of Mount Royal.
The community is served by Calgary Board of Education schools and close proximity to Mount Royal University. Earl Grey Elementary School, William Reid Elementary School, Mount Royal Junior High and Western Canada High School.
As part of ward 8, upper Mont Royal is bounded by 17th Avenue to the north, College Lane, Royal Avenue and Hope Street on the east, 10th Street, Premier Way and 8th Street on the south and 14th Street to the west.
