Sunnyside Real Estate & Community Guide

Welcome to one of Calgary’s oldest neighbourhoods! Sunnyside was originally settled by homesteaders in the 1880s, and was incorporated into Calgary in 1904.  Original residents of Sunnyside included employees of the Canadian Pacific Railway and the Eau Claire Sawmill. Sunnyside now attracts urban professionals and their families due to the proximity to the downtown core. Sunnyside has a mixture of single family homes, modern mid-rise housing, neighbourhood corner stores, restaurants and walk-up apartments. As of 2019, the community was home to just over 4,200 residents.

Sunnyside has excellent public transportation and is a biker’s paradise. Conveniently located directly north of the downtown core, you can travel to work via car, transit, bike or even by foot!  The 10th and Centre Street bridges take you directly from Sunnyside  into the downtown core.  If you’re biking or walking, you can take the architecturally stunning Peace Bridge or one of the bridges that connects to Princes Island Park. Memorial Drive, which runs along the southern edge of Sunnyside  will take you east-west across the city.  As well, the Tuscany-Somerset C-Train line runs through Sunnyside, with the closest access located at Sunnyside station.  You’ll find schedules and maps on all the transit services offered in Sunnyside by visiting the Calgary Transit website https://www.calgarytransit.com/

Sunnyside is adjacent to the lively and trendy Kensington shopping area, which offers unique independent shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs.  You’ll enjoy spending the day strolling through this one-of-a-kind area.  Nearby attractions and services include the downtown core with all of its attractions (including the Glenbow Museum, Bell Studio, Scotiabank Saddledome, Central Library, Core Shopping Centre, Arts Common, and many more!). Every November, over 3,500 crosses are placed in the Sunnyside Bank Park. The Field of Crosses Memorial remembers and honours the sacrifice of Southern Albertans who gave their lives in service to our country.

The Hillhurst Sunnyside Community Association serves the communities of Hillhurst, Upper Hillhurst, Westmount and Sunnyside in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The association’s primary service areas are for senior and outreach services and child care.  This full service community centre also offers a highly popular weekly Farmers’ Markets and Flea Markets.  Various recreation programs are also available throughout the year, and the community hall is available for rentals. Be sure to check out the Hillhurst Sunnyside Community Association website https://www.hsca.ca/or visit their Facebook page.

Sunnyside is home to the Calgary Curling Club.  From there, you can get plenty of exercise going up and down the large staircase leading up to the Crescent Heights lookout, offering fantastic views of the downtown core.  McHugh Bluff, a large hillside green space featuring skyline views, plus walking paths,  runs along the northern edge of Sunnyside.  Residents of Sunnyside will want to take advantage of the fabulous river pathway system that runs along the southern edge of the neighbourhood, running east to west along the Bow River.
