Welcome to Sunalta! The name “Sunalta” is a combination of the words “Sunny” and “Alberta”. This residential neighbourhood is located in the inner city, just west of Downtown. The community of Scarboro is directly south, the Bow River is to the north, and Crowchild Trail runs along the western edge. This area was first established in the early 1900’s and previously owned by the Canadian Pacific Railway before being annexed to the City of Calgary. Sunalta contains a mixture of single family detached homes, condo and apartment buildings.
There is excellent transit access in Sunalta with a C-Train Station located directly within the neighbourhood. Numerous bus routes also service this community. Visit www.calgarytransit.ca for the transit schedule and route map. You’ll have instant access to Crowchild Trail, which runs north/south. From there, you’ll be able to access several major routes which will take you east/west, including the Trans-Canada Highway, Memorial Drive and Glenmore Trail.
Nearby attractions include the Shaw Millennium Park, Mewata Armouries and Contemporary Calgary. This spectacular visual arts destination is dedicated to modern and contemporary art, located a short drive away in the Downtown West End. You’re also only minutes away from the endless attractions and amenities of the downtown core.
As of 2019, Sunalta was home to just over 3,200 residents.
The Sunalta community association is actively involved in advocating for concerns of its residents. The community association not only works with the city to address traffic and development issues, but also hosts a large number of fun events throughout the year. Past events include pancake breakfasts, spring clean-ups, block parties and Christmas get-togethers. The community hall is located at 1627 10 Ave SW and is home to a number of programs for all agees and a Community Garden. Living in Sunalta gives you instant access to the paved multi-use paths which line the Bow River. Other recreational opportunities within Sunalta include the Calgary Tennis Club, which is the largest seasonal club in Alberta. As well, there is an outdoor skating rink shared with the neighbouring community of Scarboro. Nearby, Shaw Millennium Park is the largest skate park of its kind in North America. It features over 75,000 square feet of skateable surfaces. Shaw Millenium Park also has basketball courts, beach volleyball, and greenspace. It welcomes over 35,000 visitors every year.
