Altadore Real Estate & Community Guide
Named as one of Calgary’s best neighbourhoods in 2010, the vibrant southwest community of Altadore offers an eclectic mix of housing – from trendy high-end infills and new apartment condos to luxury homes of days gone by and other older character homes. City census numbers suggest that a greater proportion of residents in this popular inner-city community are either couples with/without children; or young professionals with higher education (university degrees) and with higher incomes than the city average.
The origin of the name Altadore is unclear, with some saying it’s linked to an Irish mansion, while others maintain the name was simply made up – using “alta” meaning tall or high (the community is at the top of a hill) and “doré,” which roughly translates from French to mean “golden”.
It is indeed a community that’s flourishing. The urban gentrification taking place with the surge in new housing is just one factor. Then there is Marda Loop, with its many unique stores and boutiques, specialty restaurants, coffee houses and pubs. It’s a shopping destination for many Calgarians throughout the year, especially in August when tens of thousands of people flock to the area for Marda Gras, a New Orleans-themed festival.
Located between 14th Street and Crowchild Trail SW, with 33rd Avenue to the north, this community’s proximity to the Elbow River on its southeast border is also part of its appeal. Picnics and summer water sports are popular at Sandy Beach, while River Park, one of the city’s best parks along the Elbow River, is a great place for a leisurely stroll or an off-leash dog walk.
Altadore is part of the Marda Loop Community Association one of the fastest growing communities in Canada.
